
Third term at SMSG ESMA and the first meeting of the new board
Reappointment Piotr Biernacki to the SMSG confirms the confidence the EU institutions have in him and the importance of his past advisory work at the intersection of capital market, regulation and sustainable development.
On days February 18-19 Piotr Biernacki takes part in First meeting of the Securities and Markets Stakeholders Group with its new composition. Topics discussed include the growing role of private markets, further integration of capital markets in the EU, protection of individual investors in delisting processes and guidelines for delaying publication of inside information.
What is ESMA and what is its role?
ESMA (European Securities and Markets Authority) is one of the three European Supervisory Authorities (ESAs), responsible for the Stability, transparency and investor protection in the European Union's capital markets. Authority:
- Develops and coordinates the implementation of financial market regulations,
- Promotes consistency of supervision across member states,
- Monitors systemic risks and the development of financial markets,
- plays an important role in the area of Sustainable finance, ESG disclosures and regulation of non-financial information.
ESMA conducts its activities through specialized standing committees, working groups and advisory bodies, in which market representatives, experts and stakeholders participate. Strategic decisions at ESMA are made by the Board of Supervisors, which includes the chairpersons of all supervisory authorities from EU member states, such as the PFSA in Poland.
SMSG - the voice of stakeholders at the European regulator
Securities and Markets Stakeholders Group (SMSG). is ESMA's formal advisory body tasked with:
- Supporting ESMA with market expertise,
- Providing opinions on draft regulations, technical standards, guidelines and recommendations,
- Identifying trends and challenges in financial markets,
- Providing the perspective of stakeholders, including issuers, investors, users of financial services and academic experts.
SMSG plays an important role in shaping European capital market regulations, including those related to transparency, investor protection and sustainable financing.
Continuity of engagement with ESMA - SSC Consultative Working Group
It is worth noting that Piotr Biernacki also remains a member of the Sustainability Standing Committee Consultative Working Group (SSC CWG). at ESMA.
Sustainability Standing Committee (SSC) Responsible for coordinating the work of the Authority in the area of sustainable finance, including:
- ESG disclosures and sustainability information,
- The functioning of the sustainable investment value chain,
- Regulatory consistency in sustainable finance.
Consultative Working Group at the SSC brings together market experts and serves in an advisory capacity, providing practical knowledge and recommendations to support the work of the committee and the entire ESMA in the area of sustainability.
