Product Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)
MATERIALITY analysts will support your company through the product life cycle assessment (LCA) process. We assist clients at every stage: from defining the scope and collecting data, through modeling using professional industry software, to interpreting the results and applying them in practice—in environmental declarations, carbon footprint calculations, ESG reporting, and product communication.
Life Cycle Assessment (LCA, Life Cycle Assessment) is a systematic method for assessing the environmental impact of a product or service—from raw material extraction, through production, transportation, and use, to the end of the product’s life. It is conducted in accordance with ISO 14040 and ISO 14044, which set the international standard for methodology, scope, and reporting of results.
LCA forms the foundation of an increasingly broad range of regulatory and market obligations. It serves as the basis for developing Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) in accordance with the EN 15804+A2 standard, an essential source of data for calculating a product’s carbon footprint, and one of the key tools for verifying environmental claims required by the Green Directive Claims and the ESPR Regulation.
LCA results also contribute to CSRD reporting and provide a reliable basis for developing a Digital Product Passport (DPP).
The organizations we work with gain more than just the results of the analysis, but also a deep understanding of where in the value chain the environmental impact of their products is concentrated and where the greatest potential for reduction lies. This knowledge translates into informed decisions regarding design, procurement, and communication.
How will we work together?
Defining the Purpose and Scope
Together, we define the purpose of the analysis, the functional unit, and the system boundaries - cradle-this-gate, cradle-to-grave or another approach appropriate for the intended use of the results. We also determine which categories of environmental impact are key from the perspective of your organization and target markets.
Data Identification and Collection
Together with your team, we organize data from the value chain: raw materials and intermediate products, production processes, energy and water consumption, transportation, packaging, waste management, and end-of-life. We fill in data gaps using estimation methods consistent with applicable standards and industry databases.
Modeling and Impact Assessment
We model the product life cycle using professional industry software, in accordance with ISO 14040 and ISO 14044. The results include a full set of environmental impact categories, including carbon footprint (GWP), resource use, and impacts on water, air, and ecosystems, or a selected range tailored to the needs and purpose of the analysis.
Interpretation of Results and Recommendations
We interpret the results of the analysis in a business context - We identify which life cycle stages and which processes generate the greatest environmental impact and recommend specific mitigation measures. The LCA report provides a ready-made foundation for further steps: developing an EPD, calculating a carbon footprint, and reporting ESG or product communication.
Support for Applying the Results
Depending on your needs, we help translate LCA results into specific applications: EPD documentation, calculating a product’s carbon footprint, data for a digital product passport (DPP), CE marking, or reliable environmental communication in accordance with the Green Directive Claims - risk-free greenwashing.
Results of cooperation
The result of this collaboration is a comprehensive, documented product life cycle analysis, conducted in accordance with ISO 14040 and ISO 14044, along with an interpretive report and recommendations. The results provide a ready-made basis for developing an EPD, calculating a carbon footprint, and reporting ESG and communication with customers, investors, and regulatory authorities - as reliable evidence of an understanding of a product’s environmental impact and a commitment to reducing it.
