Cloud computing is not an abstraction. It's buildings, water, energy, raw materials, supply chains and real-world consequences for local communities. Justyna took participants through the physical journey of one query to AI - from a keyboard in Warsaw, to undersea cables in the Atlantic, to data centers in Virginia - showing what kind of footprint we generate when working with AI.
- One query to ChatGPT consumes ~0.4 Wh of energy, it may not be much, but a day's work with AI (8 queries) is almost half the energy needed to charge a smartphone.
- One call to an AI model is a 0.5-liter bottle of water used to cool the servers.
- In Loudoun County, Virginia, the „data center capital of the world,” one data center consumes as much energy as 200 surrounding towns.
- Globally, data centers consume ~415TWh of energy per year, which is about 1.5% of the world's electricity consumption, and this number is growing rapidly.
Artificial intelligence is advancing at a pace that no previous technology has known. Now is a good time to ask where this innovation is taking us and correct its course so that AI is a real support for people and the planet, not another burden on the environment and a source of social tension.
